Select Materials Carefully
Pool tables are significant investments, so you should carefully consider the materials that go into them. Slate is king for playing surfaces, even though other materials like plywood, fiberboard, slatex, permaslate, slatron, slatine and honeycomb are frequently used as substitutes. Each surface offers a different accuracy and smooth experience. Slate comes in thicknesses from 3/4-inch to 1-1/4-inch. The Billiard Congress of America recommends 1-inch slate, which is the most accurate thickness. Please don’t hesitate to ask about the thickness, as some manufacturers sell 7/8-inch tables as 1-inch surfaces to save money.

A quality pool table requires sturdiness to withstand repeated play. You’ll want a table with solid legs because the cabinet supports 90% of its weight. Post or perfect legs are made from solid pieces of wood coming down from the slate to the floor. Industry-standard legs are made of two parts. Look for those secured by the quad anchor system, as these are more secure than two-bolt combinations.
High-quality pool tables require sturdy frames because lack of support can cause sagging and cracking of the slate. Choose a table with slate glued to the bottom and a sufficient number of cross beams for support.
You’ll also want high-quality felt to cover the slate. Look for durable cloth with a high ounce-to-yard ratio. Cushions or rails are the final essential element. These should contain natural gum materials that won’t dry out and provide sufficient bounce over the life of the table.
